1.1 The Essence of Level 5 Leadership

Level 5 Leadership

In the first section of "Good to Great," Collins introduces the concept of Level 5 Leadership, a pivotal element in the transformation from a good company to a great one. Collins details a pyramid of leadership, with Level 5 at the pinnacle:

Level 5 - Executive

Builds enduring greatness through a paradoxical blend of personal humility and professional will.

Level 4 - Effective Leader

Stimulates high performance standards through a clear and compelling vision.

Level 3 - Competent Manager

Organises people and resources efficiently to achieve predetermined goals.

Level 2 - Contributing Team Member

Enhances group objectives and works effectively within a team.

Level 1 - Highly Capable Individual

Contributes productively through talent, knowledge, skills, and good work habits.

Collins emphasises that what sets Level 5 Leaders apart is the unique combination of "Humility + Will." Level 5 leaders are described as "modest and wilful, humble and fearless."

During his research, Collins observed a distinctive trait among good-to-great leaders: a reluctance to discuss their personal achievements, instead highlighting the company's success and the contributions of their team. This humility, however, does not undermine their determination. Collins states, "Level 5 leadership is not just about humility and modesty. It is equally about ferocious resolve, and almost stoic determination to do whatever needs to be done to make the company great."

An interesting finding in Collins' research is that ten out of eleven good-to-great CEOs emerged from within the company.

Professional Will and Personal Humility

Collins summarises the dual aspects of professional will and personal humility that define Level 5 Leaders:

Professional Will

Personal Humility

Creates superb results, acting as a clear catalyst in the transition from good to great.

Exhibits compelling modesty, shunning public adulation and never boasting.

Demonstrates an unwavering resolve to achieve long-term results, regardless of difficulty.

Acts with quiet, calm determination, motivating through inspired standards rather than charisma.

Sets and adheres to high standards for building an enduringly great company.

Channels ambition into the company, not personal gain, and sets up successors for greater future success.

Assumes responsibility for poor results, never blaming external factors or bad luck.

Attributes success to others, external factors, and good fortune, looking out the window rather than in the mirror.

The Workmanlike Diligence of Level 5 Leaders

Collins encapsulates the essence of Level 5 Leaders by describing them as displaying "a workmanlike diligence - more plough horse than show horse." This metaphor aptly captures their relentless, humble pursuit of excellence and their deep-seated commitment to the company's success over personal glory.
